Built on the highest point of the western tip of the island the watch tower was manned by the west (4th) Regiment. The men would have kept watch from 5pm - 7am and if they spotted enemy ships they lit a beacon to start a chain of beacons leading all the way to headquarters at Fort George in St Peter Port.
